Introduction
Bal Sakha Assam is a community-rooted civil society organization working in the tea garden belts, rural areas and forest-fringe villages of Upper Assam. For over a decade, we have advanced gender equality by strengthening women’s leadership, economic independence, and access to rights in some of the most socially and geographically marginalized communities in India.
Our initiative focuses on empowering tea garden workers, tribal women, and forest-dependent households through integrated strategies that combine livelihood enhancement, financial literacy, grassroots leadership development, and access to government entitlements. By organizing women into collectives, building their economic skills, and supporting their participation in local governance, we have enabled women not only to improve household income but also to become decision-makers within their communities.
Our programs have directly engaged more than 3,000 women across multiple tea estates and rural villages, with measurable improvements in income security, participation in community institutions, and girls’ education. Our model demonstrates that when women are empowered as leaders and economic actors, entire communities experience more inclusive and sustainable development.
HRD Programme For Tea Industry
A programme on HRD is introduced by Bal Sakha Assam (2019-20 to 2023-24)
A programme on HRD is introduced by Bal Sakha Assam for the betterment of tea industry. The organization is working in tea sector since 2011. The members associated with the organization have a long association with the tea sector. With its experience, BSA felt that the worker’s friendly management practices are essential and crucial to enhance the productivity of tea gardens. This can be actualized by improving the present management system by honing the skills of the future managers in the Tea management institutes.

What Secretary Says
Bal Sakha Assam is a registered organization under Society Registration Act 1860. The main focus of Bal Sakha Assam is the protection of children and women empowerment of the marginalized community. The main motto of Bal Sakha Assam is “Every child deserves to survive and thrive. From pregnancy to early childhood and adolescence, all children should have the opportunity to fulfill their potential: to grow up healthy, productive, and secure.” To achieve the above objective the organization is working on holistic child rights issues with the Government and like-minded people and organizations.
The organization is also deeply committed to the cause of marginalized youth and women from the tea garden areas of Assam. To achieve this goal, the organization started some life skill training and programs, i.e., making of solar equipment, beekeeping, training on women enrichment, use of digital platforms, etc, among the temporary women workers of different tea estates from Dibrugarh and Golaghat since 2019-20.
Our work on child protection is ongoing in tea gardens of the Dibrugarh district and women empowerment programs were held in tea gardens of the Dibrugarh and Golaghat districts. The second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic led to a sudden lockdown from May 13, 2021, till the end of July 2021. This lockdown period blew a hit to the activities as the planned action got delayed for around two months. BSA had still kept up its strength and tried to continue the regular activities through the online mode.
